2009 Black History Bowl Team

Underwood Competes in Black History Bowl

Underwood participated in the seventh annual Black History Awareness Competition sponsored by the Iota Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc from 9am–2pm Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Carnage Middle School. A study guide was provided to help prepare the students for the competition. The purpose of this “brain game” was to educate Wake County students on the rich history of the African American culture.

The competitionfeatured students from three levels: elementary, middle and high schools. Underwood's team members were Flora, Ryan, Alexi, and Zairya coached by Mrs. Bryson-Jacobs. The Underwood team competed with Durant Road, Hodge Road, Smith and York Elementaries.  At the end of the Preliminary Round Underwood placed third in overall points.  While only the two teams with the most points moved on to the Championship round, placing third was satisfying to the team.

Spotlight on Students Selection:
Keara Glasgow

Keara is a student’s student.   By that we mean she is a model for all her peers to follow from kindergarten to fifth grade.   Keara demonstrates exceptionality in academics, impeccable respect for peers and adults, and is a model school citizen exemplifying integrity, reliability, and friendliness.

With great pleasure, we celebrate her academic and social success and commend her to a remarkable future as she serves her nation and world.

Coach Clark

Underwood’s 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year

Here at Underwood we have amazing teachers. One’s name is Coach Clark, our teacher of the year. “Well, it’s very humbling, and it’s the greatest compliment that anyone has ever given me,” she said when an eager student interviewed her. Coach clark enjoys her job because she feels like she’s in a big family with all of the staff and students at Underwood.

Donna Clark was born in Columbus, Ohio on May 9, 1952. She’s in the middle of three sisters: one older and one younger. “There was always someone living in our house with us, and, um, my father was a housepainter,” Coach Clark said when she was asked for a couple facts about her family. In her childhood, she enjoyed playing cowboys and Indians, and also building. Even today building is something she enjoys doing in her spare time.

Underwood is proud to have Coach Clark, and everyone agrees that she deserves to be our teacher of the year!

Mrs. O'Brien

Underwood’s 2008-2009 Teacher Assistant of the Year

Congratulations to Mrs. Hope O’Brian who is Underwood’s Teacher Assistant of the Year 2009. Mrs. O’Brian was born in Princeton, New Jersey. Soon after that, she moved to Athens, Georgia. In Athens, Georgia, she attended Saint Joseph’s School. Her favorite childhood memory was when she learned to do an aerial cartwheel and back flip in gymnastics.

When Mrs. O’Brian won the Teacher Assistant of the Year, she felt humbled but very excited!  Mrs. O’Brian has worked at Underwood for seven years with the second grade team. She has loved working at Underwood!
